Suomenlinna is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist attraction but also a year-round home to approximately 800 residents and one of Helsinki’s districts. Suomenlinna is a village-like neighbourhood where residents know each other.

Suomenlinna can only be accessed by ferry so a ferry ride is part of the everyday life of many residents. The fortress has a primary school, a kindergarten, a church, a library and a grocery shop. Fire and rescue services are stationed on the islands only in the summer.

In the winter, the fortress becomes quiet, but in the summer, sunny days attract thousands of visitors to Suomenlinna.
